Next year, 2013, is named the year of ‘The Gathering’ when Irish people and their friends are being invited to Ireland to celebrate a holiday with a difference. The Columba Community proposes to welcome home to Donegal, the Missionaries of Ireland, and their friends.
Donegal has the unique distinction of having the first Irish missionary – Colmcille/Columba, and this island of saints and scholars has continued his legacy ever since by sending apostles to every continent on earth. By a ‘God-incident’, 2013 marks the 1450th anniversary of this first mission of Columba to Iona, Scotland. We propose to have a major celebration for all Christian missionaries, religious, lay and clerical alike who have contributed powerfully towards the development of peoples all over the world.
The venue for the gathering will be the IOSAS (Island Of Saints And Scholars) Centre and Celtic Peace Garden near White Oaks, Derryvane, Muff, Co Donegal, on the Donegal / Derry border of Inishowen. Our celebrations will commence on Sunday 9th June 2013 with a detailed programme to follow. Accommodation at St Anthony’s Retreat Centre is available for returning missionaries.
